Steve Avey

My name is Steve Avey. I am a newly formed digital artist based on the great plains in the central part of the United States. My background is in architecture, graphic design and landscape design. I did not begin doing my art until I was in my 60’s. I am self taught and very much an emerging artist. I can be contacted via my website at www.stevenavey.com.

Photoshop is my medium and my passion. Many of the techniques I use I developed myself. Beauty is paramount to me. I strive to create images that are accessible yet sophisticated. I attempt to speak to as diverse an audience as possible. I prefer spontaneity over control, the visceral over the intellectual, clarity over obfuscation, simplicity over chaos, reality over pretension, diversity over exclusion and the spiritual over the worldly. I believe this is what my art conveys.

As part of making sense of the mental illness that has challenged me my entire adult life, I have become interested in the origins of thoughts, that appear constantly to our conscious awareness. These thoughts drive our actions yet we no idea where they come from. When I work I take intellect out of the equation and allow the interaction of thoughts and consciousness (perception) to do the creating.

Statement

To me, an artist’s work is an expression of the subconscIous and beyond. It is a glimpse into a universe hidden from human awareness. I attempt to explore this with the improvisational and free form techniques I use to create my work.

I most identify with the “new casualist” art and the work of Sharon L. Butler. In the article entitled “ABSTRACT PAINTING: The New Casualists” she writes:

”Both Malevich and the new casualists, who approach their work intuitively, are unfazed by ill-defined parameters or truncated lines of thought. Like the philosopher-mathematicians who devised “fuzzy logic,” new casualists, like Suprematists, seek to accommodate a world in which there is often no clear truth or falseness. On balance, they are more intrigued by the questions and contradictions in art than by any definitive answers it might provide.”

I see a correlation between this and the explorations of quantum physics in which the laws of the macro and the nano contradict each other. I am most intrigued by those physicists trying to define consciousness, its source and its role in the shaping of the cosmos. Consciousness is the root of all art.
