Relationship to marginalized people:
According to the CDC, 1 in 27 boys are diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. This group is continually marginalized because of the assumptions people make about what a child on the spectrum can or cannot do, and these assumptions are mostly about what they cannot do, what they cannot accomplish. As a parent of a child on the spectrum, this presents a conundrum. I want his differences to be celebrated. We are all on the spectrum somewhere, we are all different. But I also don't want him bullied or singled out. And so I try to help him fit in. But my greatest fear is that in urging him to fit in I have somehow caused the sadness in this picture....

Label Description
My son is on the Autism Spectrum. This group is marginalized because people continually make assumptions about what a child on
the spectrum cannot do, instead of seeing what they can accomplish. As a parent of a child on the spectrum, I want his differences to be celebrated. We are all on the
spectrum somewhere, we are all different. But I also don't want him bullied or singled out. And so I try to help him fit in. This picture represents either his sensory overload,
the inner life that he must break out of, or it’s my greatest fear: that in urging him to fit in I have somehow caused the sadness in his eyes....
