Type of work: : Limited EditionLabel Description: Digital Composite, Self-Portrait. As a gay boy, I struggled with my sexuality and the need to fit in. I did not come out until I was 21 years old, but was fortunate to have found two incredible role models to help me through the journey. These African-American men had profound and positive influences on my adult life, helping to destroy some of the racist and homophobic thoughts that had been beat into my brain as a child. The image represents me as a teen boy struggling with the fear of being "found out". The bird cage over my head shows that the fear is largely internal and mostly irrelevant to the outside world. The black frigate bird is swooping in to remove the cage and free me. One wing for Dr. Coleman, the Naval psychiatrist who risked his career to tell me there was nothing wrong with me; and the other for Scott Gaffney, who took over as my spiritual advisor after I was discharged from the Navy. People feel uncomfortable around them. We avoid their eyes as if we can make them disappear. Each piece shows people with blank faces while the homeless lay in detail at their feet. The homeless exist on the outskirts of society. Anti-homeless tactics prevent them from sitting on benches or laying on gates to keep warm during the winter. They are marginalized to make society comfortable.

This group is marginalized because people continually make assumptions about what a child on the spectrum cannot do, instead of seeing what they can accomplish. As a parent of a child on the spectrum, I want his differences to be celebrated. We are all on the spectrum somewhere, we are all different. But I also don't want him bullied or singled out. And so I try to help him fit in. This picture represents either his sensory overload, the inner life that he must break out of, or it’s my greatest fear: that in urging him to fit in I have somehow caused the sadness in his eyes....
